Understanding the Concept

The Settings Catalog is the modern way to configure device settings in Intune. It provides a flat list of all available settings that can be searched and filtered, replacing the need to know which profile type contains a specific setting. The catalog contains thousands of settings for Windows, macOS, and iOS.

Unlike traditional configuration profiles that group settings by category, the Settings Catalog allows you to pick individual settings from across all categories into a single profile. This provides maximum flexibility and reduces the number of profiles needed.

The Settings Catalog also surfaces settings that aren't available in traditional profile templates, including newer CSP (Configuration Service Provider) settings and ADMX-backed policies. It supports importing custom ADMX templates for third-party application settings.

Key Points

  • Settings Catalog: flat searchable list of all device settings
  • Combines settings from multiple categories into one profile
  • Contains more settings than traditional profile templates
  • Supports ADMX-backed policies (Group Policy equivalent)
  • Available for Windows, macOS, and iOS platforms
  • Recommended approach for new configuration profiles

Why This Matters in Real Organizations

The Settings Catalog simplifies configuration management by providing a single interface for all settings. Administrators no longer need to know which profile type contains a specific setting, reducing configuration time and errors.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Still using traditional profile templates when Settings Catalog has the setting
Not searching the catalog thoroughly before creating custom OMA-URI profiles
Creating separate profiles per setting instead of combining in one catalog profile
Not understanding that Settings Catalog profiles can coexist with traditional profiles
